Put-in-Bay
Peace
Memorial

  About 20-minutes
into the voyage from Port Clinton, the rocky
shores of Middle Bass Island come into sharp view. Upon
  entering
the Bay, the small island on your right is known as Gibraltar Island,
because of the rocky similarities to its European counterpart.
From its highest outcropping, it is
  said,
Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry's men, in the War of 1812,
used this as a lookout over the battle of Lake Erie.
     Through Gibraltar's trees you can
  see the
  Jay Cooke castle
and the

  Ohio State University Stone Laboratory.

Dead-ahead looms

Perry's Victory
  & International Peace Memorial,
America's third tallest
  national monument. When on
  or within sight
of the Bay you can many times get your bearings from this immense
structure. Sometimes, however, even that won't help.
For a small fee you can ride the elevator to the top of the monument.
Along the way there is a miniature display of Perry's warship,
the

  U.S. Brig
  Niagara.
